What Sculptra is and what it does
Sculptra does not work the way most people expect an aesthetic injectable to work. There is no immediate change. It does not replace lost volume by putting something in its place. Instead, it triggers your own body to build collagen, and that process takes months. For people who want gradual, natural-looking improvement, that is exactly the appeal. For people who expect visible results within a week, it is probably not the right fit.
Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic compound used in medicine for decades, including in absorbable surgical sutures. It is biocompatible and breaks down in the body over time.
When injected into the deep dermis or subcutaneous tissue, it triggers a controlled inflammatory response. The body surrounds the microparticles with collagen, and that collagen remains even after the particles have been absorbed. The product itself does not create volume. Your own tissue does.
How it differs from hyaluronic acid fillers
A hyaluronic acid filler works differently. It adds volume directly at the injection site, and results are visible almost immediately. The product then dissolves over time, typically between 6 and 18 months depending on the formulation and area.
Sculptra produces nothing immediate. In the first two to three days, you will notice some swelling from the diluting fluid. That goes away. Then, over six to twelve weeks, collagen starts to form. Results from Sculptra can last around two years, sometimes longer, which tends to be well beyond a standard filler.
These are different tools for different goals. Some people are better suited to one, others to the other, and many benefit from both. The consultation is where that gets sorted out.
How a typical course of treatment works
Sculptra is usually given as a series: most commonly two to three sessions, spaced roughly four to six weeks apart. The number of vials and the frequency depend on the area being treated, how much volume loss is present, and what the physician observes during the evaluation.
Each session typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. The product is diluted in sterile water and injected at multiple points, usually with lidocaine added to reduce discomfort.
After each session, a massage protocol matters. The standard recommendation is to massage the treated area for five minutes, five times a day, for five days. This helps distribute the microparticles evenly and reduces the chance of nodule formation.
What the timeline looks like
- Days 1 to 3: swelling and sometimes minor bruising at injection points.
- Weeks 2 to 4: swelling resolves. Not much to see yet.
- Weeks 6 to 12: collagen begins forming. A subtle improvement becomes noticeable.
- Months 3 to 6: results reach full effect. Skin looks firmer and fuller in a way that reads as natural.
- Beyond 12 months: results taper gradually. With maintenance, many people sustain the benefit well past the one-year mark.
Individual responses vary. These are reference points, not guarantees.
Who Sculptra may suit
Sculptra is often considered for people who notice diffuse volume loss with age, particularly in the cheeks, temples, and the area in front of the ears. It can also work well for people interested in improving overall skin quality rather than targeting one specific zone.
It is generally not the first choice for correcting a single deep fold or adding volume to the lips. Other options tend to be more appropriate for those goals. A consultation with a physician is the right way to determine whether Sculptra makes sense for you, on its own or alongside another treatment.
Downtime and what to watch for
Sculptra does not require significant downtime. Most patients go back to their usual routine the same day or the next. A few guidelines apply:
- Avoid intense sun exposure and saunas for about a week.
- Put off professional facial massage and thermal treatments for a few days.
- Follow the home massage protocol carefully.
- Tell your physician if you take blood thinners, as this can increase bruising.
Redness, mild swelling, and small bruises at injection sites are normal and resolve on their own. Serious complications are uncommon. When they do occur, they are managed more effectively when the treating provider is a physician who can assess the situation and intervene if needed.
What physician-led treatment means in practice
In Quebec, aesthetic injections can be performed by several categories of practitioners depending on their training and regulatory context. A physician brings deep anatomical training, the ability to manage complications, and the clinical judgment to decide when a treatment is appropriate versus when a different approach would serve you better.
At La Cle, every case is evaluated individually. The goal is not to run patients through a standard protocol. It is to understand what you are trying to achieve, assess your anatomy, and recommend what makes medical sense for you.

Frequently asked questions
How many Sculptra vials does a typical treatment require?
Most people need two to three vials per session across a series of two to three sessions. The exact number depends on the area being treated and the degree of volume loss. Your physician will give you a realistic estimate after the in-person evaluation.
Are Sculptra results permanent?
No. Sculptra stimulates collagen production, but that collagen breaks down naturally over time. Results can last around two years, and maintenance sessions help sustain the benefit beyond that.
Does it hurt?
The product is mixed with lidocaine, which reduces discomfort during injection considerably. Some tenderness and mild swelling afterward are normal. Most patients describe the experience as manageable.
Can Sculptra be combined with other treatments?
In many cases, yes. Some people combine it with hyaluronic acid fillers or other treatments to address specific goals. The physician determines whether a combination makes sense and in what sequence to proceed.
When will I see results?
Not right away. The first signs of improvement typically appear six to twelve weeks after the first session, once collagen production is underway. Full effect is usually visible three to six months after the series begins.
